Dr. Frank Mazzotti is a Professor at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center (FLREC), part of the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). His research focuses on wildlife ecology in South Florida ecosystems, particularly the Everglades, with emphasis on conservation planning and human-wildlife interactions.
His primary research interests include conservation planning, endangered species management, landscape ecology, and environmental education. Much of his work centers on native crocodilians (American alligators and crocodiles) and invasive reptiles (Burmese pythons, tegus, caimans), examining their ecology, management, and impacts on Florida's biodiversity. He employs diverse methodologies including stable isotope analysis, camera trapping, genetic assays, and community science to address wildlife management challenges.
Analysis of Dr. Mazzotti's recent publications (2023-2025) reveals three dominant research themes: invasive species management (particularly Burmese python detection/removal and tegu ecology), crocodilian conservation as ecosystem indicators, and innovative detection technologies. His work increasingly integrates molecular tools like digital PCR with field methods to improve invasive species control while documenting human-wildlife conflicts and trade dynamics.
Dr. Mazzotti actively collaborates with state and federal agencies on wildlife management projects and contributes to Everglades restoration efforts. His research directly informs policy and on-the-ground conservation strategies for Florida's unique ecosystems, with significant focus on community engagement for invasive species detection and mitigation.
