Frank Lobbezoo is a Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). He is also an Honorary Professor at Aarhus University and holds roles at Sunstar Suisse SA, Stichting Mondzorg en Parkinson, and Malmö University. His research focuses on orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, sleep disorders, and bruxism. He has supervised 23 PhD theses and contributed to over 678 publications.
Research Interests: Dr. Lobbezoo’s work addresses bruxism, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and sleep-related disorders. Recent studies explore links between bruxism and post-traumatic stress, the role of orexin receptors in pain modulation, and telehealth interventions for tinnitus.
Key Achievements: Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), editorial board member of journals like Journal of Craniomandibular Function, and contributor to projects like ‘Innovative (oral) healthcare approaches for older people.’
Advising & Grants: Supervised 23 PhD students, including A. Lövgren. Active in research projects addressing geriatric oral health and pain assessment tools for cognitively impaired patients.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction department at ACTA, collaborating on interdisciplinary studies in dentistry, neuroscience, and rehabilitation.
