Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europeمعرفی
Frank Hadler serves as Department Head for Interconnection and globalization at the Leibniz Institute for the History and Cultural Studies of Eastern Europe (GWZO) in Leipzig. Appointed Honorary Professor for Cultural History of East Central Europe at the University of Leipzig in 2011, he coordinates 19th/20th century historical research while leading major transnational projects including the BMBF-funded 'East Central Europe Transnational' initiative (2006-2016) and current SFB 1199 research on socialist development models.
His research spans transnationalization processes, East Central European cultural history, historiography evolution, and post-WWI international relations. Key methodologies focus on knowledge circulation networks and comparative national history frameworks, examining how scientific traditions like glacial geology and ornithology intersected with regional cultural developments during globalization phases. Current work investigates Cold War-era East-South economic relations and counters (re)nationalization trends in Eastern European historiography through transnational network reconstruction.
Scientific recognition includes prestigious fellowships at:
- Woodrow Wilson International Center (1989)
- St. Anthony's College, Oxford (1992)
- CNRS Paris (1994)
- École des hautes études (2001)
- École d'Etudes slaves (2006)
As academic leader, he chairs the International Advisory Board at the Czech Academy of Sciences' Institute of History (since 2021) and co-chairs the German-Czech/Slovak Historical Commission (2017-2024). His editorial leadership spans 15+ journals including 'Global History and International Studies' (since 2006) and 'Bohemia' (2008-2023). Major grants include BMBF project leadership (2006-2016) and SFB 1199 coordination (2016-2024), directing teams of 20+ researchers across 8 European institutions.
