Frank Costigliola is the Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Connecticut, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His expertise spans U.S. foreign relations, Cold War history, and the intersection of personal politics with diplomatic strategy. He holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and has authored seminal works such as George F. Kennan: A Life between Worlds and Roosevelt’s Lost Alliances, which have earned prestigious awards including the Graebner Prize and the Robert H. Ferrell Book Prize. His research emphasizes cultural, emotional, and gendered dimensions of international relations.
Costigliola’s career includes fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Institute for Advanced Study. He has lectured globally and served as president of the Society of Historians of American Foreign Relations. His current projects include a revised edition of Explaining the History of American Foreign Relations and a biography of historian Walter LaFeber. Beyond academia, he has lived sustainably on a self-built homestead since his early career.
