Franita Tolson serves as Dean and Carl Mason Franklin Chair in Law at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, holding a courtesy faculty appointment in the Political Science and International Relations Department at USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. Previously, she was interim dean (2023–present) and vice dean for faculty and academic affairs (2019–2022) at USC Gould.

Tolson co-authored the leading casebook The Law of Democracy (6th ed., 2022) and has a forthcoming book In Congress We Trust?: Enforcing Voting Rights from the Founding to the Jim Crow Era (Cambridge University Press).
Her scholarly output demonstrates consistent focus on voting rights enforcement mechanisms, congressional authority under the Elections Clause, and constitutional interpretation of Reconstruction Amendments. Recent works analyze the Independent State Legislature doctrine, Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, and historical foundations of suffrage.
