Francois Heinderyckx is a Full Professor at Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), where he has been teaching since 2010. He previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Letters, Translation and Communication at ULB from 2015 to 2019. Additionally, he held the prestigious position of Chang Jiang Professor of Communication at the Communication University of China in Beijing from 2014 to 2018. He is also Series Editor-in-Chief of the Wiley Blackwell – ICA International Encyclopedias of Communication.
Professor Heinderyckx's research focuses on several key areas within communication and media studies. His primary fields of interest include media literacy, digital media, journalism, political communication, general media studies, and e-Government. His work examines how digital transformation impacts media practices, journalistic professionalism, and public communication in increasingly fragmented media environments, with particular attention to gatekeeping theory, transnational news flows, and European public spheres.
His publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly productivity with recent works spanning from 2014-2019. These publications reveal a strong focus on digital transformation's impact on journalism, evolving gatekeeping practices in contemporary media, data journalism development in Belgium, and the theoretical challenges facing communication scholars. His research bridges academic theory with practical media concerns, often addressing the tension between scholarly perspectives and professional journalistic practices.
