Francisco Cayabyab is a Professor in the Neuroscience Cluster within the Department of Surgery at the University of Saskatchewan's College of Medicine. His research investigates adenosine receptor signaling in stroke, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, and cancer biology. Current projects include stem cell therapies for Parkinson's, neuroprotection via caffeine-derived compounds, and HERG channel roles in breast cancer.
Research techniques include confocal microscopy, electrophysiology, stroke/PD animal models, and cancer cell line analysis. Cayabyab leads a multidisciplinary team of 23+ trainees and collaborates internationally on mitochondrial biology, cholesterol transport, and neuroimmunology. Funding sources include the Heart and Stroke Foundation, NSERC, and Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation.
Recent publications explore trace element dysregulation in stroke (2024), bifunctional neuroprotectants for α-synucleinopathies (2024), and HERG channel oncogenic mechanisms (2020).
