Dr. Francis X. Galán is an Associate Professor of History at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, where he teaches courses on Latin America, Mexico, Texas, and Caribbean history.
Dr. Galán's academic journey includes:
- PhD in History from Southern Methodist University (2006)
- MA in History from the University of Texas at San Antonio (1999)
- BA in Latin American Studies with concentration in history from the University of Texas at Austin (1990)
His research focuses on Latin American History, particularly Mexican History, Texas History, and Caribbean History during the Spanish colonial period. Dr. Galán's work has made significant contributions to our understanding of Spanish colonial settlements in Texas, with emphasis on governance structures and community development in early Spanish territories.
Dr. Galán's scholarly achievements include:
- His award-winning book 'Los Adaes: The First Capital of Spanish Texas' (2020), published by Texas A&M University Press
- 2023 book award from the San Antonio Conservation Society Foundation
- 2022 book award from the Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Association
- Finalist for the 2021 Ramirez Family Award for Most Significant Scholarly Book from the Texas Institute of Letters
Dr. Galán is currently working on a biography about Antonio Gil Ybarbo, Captain and Lt. Governor who founded the Spanish town of Nacogdoches in 1779. He has also contributed to historical handbook entries on figures including Curbelo, Juan; Curbelo, Joseph; and Galán, Enríque Manuel, demonstrating his expertise in Spanish colonial historical figures.
