Francis P. Cody is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) with a 50% cross-appointment at the Asian Institute. He earned his PhD from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor in 2007 and specializes in linguistic anthropology with a focus on southern India, particularly Tamil Nadu.
His research interests span Linguistic Anthropology, Sociocultural Anthropology, Critical Social Theory, and Media Studies, with particular attention to postcolonial state formation, literacy, social activism, and the political dimensions of language. Cody examines how political publicity is transformed through Tamil and English news media, exploring questions of law, technology, and violence in claims to representing popular sovereignty.
Cody's influential book The Light of Knowledge: Literacy Activism and the Politics of Writing in South India (Cornell 2013) won the Edward Sapir Book Prize from the Society for Linguistic Anthropology. His more recent work includes The News Event: Popular Sovereignty in the Age of Deep Mediatization (Chicago 2023) and co-editing Bernard Bate's posthumous work Protestant Textuality and the Tamil Modern (Stanford 2021).
His publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output focused on the intersection of language, politics, and media infrastructure in postcolonial contexts, with particular attention to how digital media transforms political representation in South Asia. His work contributes to transdisciplinary projects elaborating critical social theories of mass mediation and politics.
