Francis Mourey

Francis Mourey serves as Assistant Professor of cello and chamber music at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he functions as assistant in both chamber music and cello classes. He additionally holds cello professor positions at the academies of Molenbeek-St-Jean and Woluwe-Saint-Pierre.

His educational foundation includes a DEM with honors (2003) unanimously awarded in Laurent Lagarde's cello class at the CNR in Dijon, followed by a degree with great distinction (2008) under Marie Hallynck at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He expanded his expertise through studies in conducting with Jean-Sébastien Béreau, organ with Jean-Pierre Leguay, and composition with Guy Leclercq.

Mourey's artistic practice spans cello performance, chamber music, orchestral work, and cross-disciplinary collaborations with theater, dance, and poetry. His research interests emphasize the dialogue between historical and contemporary repertoires, particularly through commissioning new works from Belgian composers to enrich national cultural heritage.

His distinguished awards include:

As an educator, Mourey views teaching as a privileged exchange transcending technical instruction, focusing on sharing musical knowledge with emerging artists. His performance career features regular engagements with the National Orchestra of Belgium (principal cellist since 2015) and Brussels Philharmonic, alongside solo appearances at major venues including Concertgebouw in Bruges and Singel in Antwerp.

Mourey actively performs with the Khaldei Trio—appearing at Bozar (Brussels), Concertgebouw (Bruges), DeSingel, and AMUZ (Antwerp)—and in a cello-piano duo with Aude Vallée. The trio's 2017 Shostakovich/Prokofiev CD release on Paraty label exemplifies their commitment to bridging historical and contemporary musical traditions.
