Francis Doyle is a Professor of Engineering and the 14th Provost of Brown University, serving as the University's chief academic and budget officer. He previously served as Dean of Harvard's John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (2011–2020), where he strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration across Harvard's schools. Earlier roles included Mellichamp Professor at UC Santa Barbara (2005–2011), leading the Department of Chemical Engineering and directing the UCSB/MIT/Caltech Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies. His research focuses on biomedical engineering, diabetes technology, and systems biology, with notable contributions to artificial pancreas systems and circadian rhythm modeling. Doyle holds memberships in both the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine.
Education: B.A. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, postgraduate studies at Cambridge University, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Caltech.
Research interests span engineering-driven healthcare solutions, including closed-loop insulin delivery systems, glucose dynamics modeling, and the intersection of circadian rhythms with metabolic disorders. His work integrates control systems engineering with clinical applications, aiming to improve diabetes management through predictive algorithms and wearable technologies. Recent studies explore the impact of exercise, diet, and stress on glycemic control in type 1 diabetes patients.
Scientific contributions include over 200 peer-reviewed articles on topics like artificial pancreas design, PTSD biomarkers, and circadian rhythm synchronization. Awards include the National Academy memberships and recognition for interdisciplinary engineering leadership.
As Provost, Doyle oversees academic strategy, faculty development, and institutional priorities at Brown University. His administrative roles have emphasized fostering innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and equitable access to education.
