Francine Govers

Francine Govers is a Professor at Wageningen University & Research, affiliated with the Laboratory of Phytopathology within the Plant Sciences Group. Though listed as an EPS External employee, she maintains an active research program focused on plant pathogens, particularly oomycetes and Phytophthora species.

Her research spans plant-microbe interactions, pathogenicity mechanisms, and evolutionary biology of plant pathogens. Govers specializes in Phytophthora infestans (the cause of potato blight), zoospore biology, and the molecular mechanisms of plant disease. Her work combines molecular biology, genomics, and evolutionary approaches to understand how pathogens infect plants and how plants defend themselves.

Professor Govers has published extensively with 488 research outputs including 195 articles, 26 book chapters, and 228 abstracts. Her recent work focuses on oomycete metabolism, Phytophthora taxonomy, and the behavior of zoospores in response to chemical signals. As a supervisor, she has guided numerous PhD candidates including Kasteel, Bronkhorst, Kots, Rodenburg, and Overdijk through projects examining Phytophthora infection mechanisms, mechanobiology of pathogen invasion, cytoskeletal dynamics, and plant-pathogen interaction networks. She has also served on editorial boards for major journals including European Journal of Plant Pathology, Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, and Euphytica.
