Francine Berman is the Stuart Rice Research Professor in the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Director of Public Interest Technology. She serves as a Faculty Associate at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. Her leadership spans roles as former Director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center, former Vice President for Research at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and co-founder of the international Research Data Alliance.
Her research focuses on Public Interest Technology, IoT’s societal/environmental impacts, data policy, and cyberinfrastructure stewardship. She actively addresses ethical challenges in technology’s design and governance, emphasizing cultural shifts for responsible innovation.
