Professor Francesco Picchioni is a faculty member in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Product Technology — Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen. His research focuses on sustainable materials, polymer science, and supercritical fluids technology, with emphasis on bio-based polymers, environmental applications, and recycling innovations. He leads projects like the EU-funded 'Rubber Recycling' initiative targeting eco-friendly tyre materials. Active in teaching Interfacial Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, and Colloid Chemistry, he advises students in industrial and environmental engineering domains.
Research interests include developing green polymers, optimizing supercritical CO2 processes, and advancing sustainable manufacturing. Notable contributions include bio-degradable superabsorbent polymers and numerical modeling of polypropylene extrusion with supercritical fluids. He collaborates with industry through advisory roles such as the UPPACT Board and engages in outreach via media commentaries on sustainability topics.
Recent projects emphasize environmental impact reduction, including the 'Norubtreet4life' initiative for eco-tyres. Teaching activities span both undergraduate and graduate courses, integrating practical industry applications with academic rigor. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing responsible consumption and clean energy systems.
