Professor Francesco Cuomo is a Professor of Early Childhood Education and Didactics with a focus on natural sciences, mathematics and technology at Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences Berlin since 2019. His academic journey spans multiple institutions across Europe, with significant contributions to science education research.
His educational background includes a Dr. rer. nat. in Physics from Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (2001), an MA in Communication of the Natural Sciences from International School for Advanced Studies Trieste (2005), and an MS in Physics from Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (1998). He also holds a teaching qualification for mathematics and natural sciences in secondary schools.
Professor Cuomo's research focuses on STEM education in childhood, inquiry-based science education, basic concepts and practices in STEM education, modeling learning progressions, and Education for Sustainable Development. His work emphasizes the training and further education of educational professionals, with particular attention to natural sciences, mathematics and technology education. He has conducted extensive research on how children develop scientific understanding through hands-on activities and inquiry-based approaches.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on practical applications of educational theory, with numerous articles examining workshop-based learning, modeling in science education, proportional reasoning in primary mathematics, and the integration of STEM concepts across early childhood education. His work often bridges theoretical frameworks with practical classroom applications.
Professor Cuomo serves as the Scientific Director of the Learning Workshop for Scientific and Technical Education and is a board member of the Institute for Productive Learning in Europe. He is actively involved with several professional organizations including the European Science Education Research Association (ESERA), the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST), and the International Research Group on Physics Teaching (GIREP).
Throughout his career, Professor Cuomo has led and contributed to numerous EU-funded research projects, including SUP4PCL, INSTEM, SIS-CATALYST, TRACES, and PENCIL, focusing on innovative approaches to science education across formal and informal learning contexts. His work has significantly influenced science education practices and teacher development across Europe.
