Francesca Maria Pernice, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at Wayne State University's College of Education. She serves as Director of Counseling Psychology, Area Coordinator, and Founding Member and Associate Faculty Director of the College of Education’s Mental Health & Wellness Clinic. She leads the Pernice Research Hub, dedicated to community-engaged research on mental health recovery and social connection.
Dr. Pernice’s research is grounded in Ecological Systems Theory and a multicultural, post-modern feminist framework, focusing on the Clubhouse Model of psychosocial rehabilitation. Her work investigates how social connections, community engagement, and systemic change influence well-being and recovery among individuals with serious mental illness. She also explores trauma in refugee populations and the impact of virtual programming during the pandemic.
Her recent publications (2021–2024) demonstrate a consistent focus on member engagement, recovery narratives, and virtual adaptations of the Clubhouse model. These works employ both qualitative and quantitative methods, often in collaboration with doctoral students and interdisciplinary teams. Key themes include social practice, community as therapy, and the sustainability of psychosocial support systems.

Her work bridges clinical practice, academic research, and community partnerships, emphasizing person-environment-centered values and systemic transformation in mental health care.
She is affiliated with the Pernice Research Hub, which fosters research collaborations with community organizations such as Assured Family Services, Fountain House, and Clubhouse Michigan. These partnerships support real-world applications of research findings and promote recovery-oriented practices.
