Francesca Brittan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music at Case Western Reserve University, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Cognitive Science. She holds a PhD from Cornell University (2007) and has held fellowships at Queens’ College, Cambridge (2006–08), the University of Toronto, and the University of Amsterdam. Her research explores sonic histories of medicine, auditory cognition, music and neuroscience, and the intersection of music with emotions and listening psychologies.

Research Interests: Brittan’s work bridges historical musicology and contemporary cognitive science, focusing on neurodivergent auralities, the evolution of auditory attention theories, and the role of sound in medical contexts. Current projects include Instruments of Mind: Cognitive Orchestrations and The Spectral Conductor.

Editorial Roles: Co-Editor of the Journal of Musicology; General Editor for Recent Researches in Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Music (A-R Editions). Her publications include Music and Fantasy in the Age of Berlioz (2017) and Berlioz and His World (2024).
Teaching: Coordinates graduate studies in musicology and teaches courses on music and mind, environmental sound, and orchestral conducting cultures. Active as a fortepianist and historical performance instructor at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
