Francesca Amati is an Associate Professor at the University of Lausanne (UNIL), affiliated with the Faculty of Biology and Medicine and the Department of Biomedical Sciences since 2020. She previously held positions in the Department of Physiology and the Institute of Sports Sciences (ISSUL), an interfaculty institute supported by both the Faculty of Biology and Medicine and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. She leads the Aging and Muscle Metabolism Lab and established the CHUV Sport & Diabetes Consultation in 2012, a joint clinical service between Sports Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetology and Metabolism at CHUV.
Her educational background includes a medical degree from the University of Geneva, followed by FMH specializations in internal medicine and sports medicine. She earned a Master's degree in translational research and a PhD in exercise physiology from the University of Pittsburgh in 2009.
Francesca Amati's research centers on muscle metabolism in chronic metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity, and in aging. Her work bridges basic science and clinical application, exploring how physical inactivity and obesity contribute to age-related diseases like type 2 diabetes and sarcopenia. She investigates the reversibility of age-related metabolic disorders through exercise, emphasizing a participatory model where volunteers are active partners benefiting from sustainable coaching. Her research has evolved to include subcellular mechanisms, particularly organelle interactions such as those between lipid droplets and mitochondria, using fish models to study aging processes.
Although no individual articles are listed in the provided text, her recent recognition includes an article published in the prestigious journal CELL in March 2024, indicating high-impact contributions to her field. Her research trends reflect a strong focus on translational physiology, metabolic health, and innovative clinical models integrating sport and medicine.
- Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award (2022)
- Ambizione FNS Grant recipient
Francesca Amati has been deeply involved in academic leadership and education. She served as head of physiology teaching and was appointed Vice-Academic Director of the School of Medicine at UNIL in June 2023. She also became co-president of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Commission of the Faculty of Biology and Medicine in 2023, reflecting her commitment to educational reform and equity in academia. Her grants include support from the Swiss National Science Foundation through the Ambizione program, enabling her to establish her research group at UNIL.
She leads the Aging and Muscle Metabolism Lab, a multidisciplinary team comprising doctors, biologists, and exercise physiologists, and co-manages the CHUV Sport & Diabetes Consultation, which serves both elite athletes and non-athletes referred for medical fitness programs. Her approach integrates research, clinical practice, and teaching, positioning her as a key figure in translational sports and metabolic medicine at UNIL.
