Francesca Aguilo is an Associate Professor at the Department of Molecular Biology, Umeå University, and a Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) Fellow. Her research focuses on RNA modifications and their role in gene expression, cell fate, and cancer pathogenesis.
She earned her Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and Biology and completed her doctoral education in Barcelona, followed by a seven-year postdoctoral appointment in New York. She joined Umeå University in 2017 as one of the inaugural WCMM Fellows. Her work centers on deciphering how chemical modifications to RNA molecules influence global gene expression patterns and contribute to diseases like cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's.
Dr. Aguilo's team has made significant discoveries showing that manipulating RNA modifications alters cancer cell behavior, potentially enabling therapies that selectively target malignant cells while sparing healthy tissue. Recent findings include breakthroughs in embryonic stem cell pluripotency and RNA-based mechanisms driving cancer progression.
- Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine Fellowship
- SEK 8 million grant for cancer research (2019)
She leads an active research group at Umeå's Hospital area (locations 6K and 6L), mentoring future scientists while pursuing translational applications of RNA biology. Her work bridges fundamental molecular mechanisms with clinical cancer research, emphasizing therapeutic targeting of RNA modification pathways.
