Francesc Amat is a Ramon y Cajal Research Fellow and Deputy Director of the Institutions and Political Economy Research Group (IPERG) at the University of Barcelona (UB), where he also serves in the Department of Economic History, Institutions, Politics and World Economy. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Oxford (Nuffield College). His research focuses on Political Economy, Comparative Politics, Institutions, Historical Political Economy, and Inequality, with notable work on labor movements, electoral participation, and territorial conflicts.
Amat has authored influential articles on topics like the impact of economic inequality on democracy, fiscal redistribution dynamics, and the resilience of democratic systems during crises such as the 2020 pandemic. He is a visiting professor at IBEI and UC3M, and contributes to academic governance through roles like membership in the Master in Institutions and Political Economy (MIPE) Academic Council at UB.
His work frequently intersects historical and contemporary case studies, including analyses of Catalan regional autonomy and far-right nationalism. The Ramon y Cajal Fellowship underscores his recognition as a leading early-career scholar in political economy.
