Dr Fran der Weduwen is an Associate Lecturer in Cell Biology and Biochemistry at the University of St Andrews, School of Biology. She holds a dual role as a Researcher, focusing on interdisciplinary areas spanning microbiology research and undergraduate education innovation. Her email is fe9@st-andrews.ac.uk.
Her research interests include medical microbiology with a focus on bacterial pathogenesis and infection models, particularly using Galleria mellonella larvae as an in vivo system. She also explores antibiotic efficacy and immunosuppression effects in infection contexts. Parallel to this, Dr der Weduwen develops co-curricular programs to improve lab skills training for undergraduate neuroscience and biology students.
Her recent publications highlight contributions to both experimental microbiology and educational methodologies. Notable work includes establishing the Galleria mellonella model for studying non-tuberculosis mycobacteria and evaluating dexamethasone phosphate's immunosuppressive effects on bacterial virulence. In education, she co-developed the Practical Skills Passport program to enhance student confidence in laboratory practices.
Dr der Weduwen collaborates with researchers like Prof. Peter Coote (Medical Microbiology) and Dr. Gemma Doherty (Education Innovation), though no formal advising relationships with students are explicitly documented.
