Dr Fran Allfrey is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Archaeology at the University of York, affiliated with the AHRC-funded 'Avebury Papers' project (2022–2026). She coordinates digitization of the Avebury archive and explores narrative pathways for creative reuse of heritage materials. Her work bridges archaeology, literature, and media, focusing on how premodern heritage shapes identity and public discourse.
Education: PhD in 'Sutton Hoo in Public: Newspapers, Television, and Museums' from King's College London (2020). AHRC-funded research examining intersections of medieval literature, archaeology, and identity.
Research Interests: Premodern heritage narratives, public archaeology, museum education, medievalism's role in identity formation, and translation/creative reuse of historical texts. Her monograph The Making of Sutton Hoo adapts thesis work on cinema, poetry, and material culture.
Grants & Projects: Principal Investigator on the Avebury Papers project; previously taught medieval literature at the University of Reading, Queen Mary, and King’s College London. Organized events like Heritage Jam 2024 and workshops on museum education.
