Dr. Fouad Daayf is a Professor in the Department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. His research focuses on molecular and biochemical interactions between plants and pathogens, including defense suppression mechanisms, biocontrol strategies using plant extracts and beneficial microbes, and detection biology of soilborne/foliar pathogens.
- Education: PhD in Plant Pathology (Montpellier University, France), Doctorat-d’État in Plant Biotechnology (Cadi Ayyad University, Morocco), MSc in Agronomic Sciences (University of Manitoba), BSc in Plant Biology (Cadi Ayyad University).
He teaches courses like PLNT4580 Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions and PLNT4570 Research Methods in Plant Pathology. His current projects include NSERC-Discovery on pathogen adaptation, S-CAP for potato disease management, and CAP-Barley Cluster for pathogen variation studies. He serves on the Canadian Plant Health Council and chairs the CPS Manitoba Regional Section.
Scientific awards include the 2021 Canadian Phytopathological Society Outstanding Research Award and multiple University of Manitoba Merit Awards for research and service. His lab has trained numerous PhD/MSc students and postdocs studying plant defense mechanisms against pathogens like Phytophthora infestans and Verticillium dahliae.
