Folkert Kuipers is a Professor at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Groningen, serving as Scientific Director of ERIBA and head of the Department of the Biology of Ageing. He previously held leadership roles including Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (2008-2016) and Head of the Laboratory of Pediatrics (2000-2008, 2016-2022).
- Education: PhD in Medical Sciences (University of Groningen, 1987), Biology/Biochemistry (University of Groningen).
Research Focus: Investigates molecular mechanisms of cholesterol, bile acid, and lipid metabolism in liver and intestine, with emphasis on gut microbiome interactions and applications to inherited and age-related metabolic diseases. His work bridges basic research with population cohort studies like Lifelines and ERIBA.
Scientific Contributions: Author of >350 peer-reviewed publications and supervisor of >40 PhD theses. Recent work explores bile acid regulation, gut-liver axis dynamics, and microbiome-driven lipid metabolism.
