Floris van der Tak is a Professor of Astrochemistry and the Habitability of Exoplanets at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Science and Engineering. He holds a dual appointment as Senior Scientist at SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research and serves on the Board of the Netherlands Origins Center. As Scientific Coordinator of the Evolve programme, he investigates the origins of life on Earth and other planets. His research focuses on interstellar medium physics, molecular spectroscopy, and exoplanet habitability.
He actively contributes to sustainability initiatives, including advising the University of Groningen on CO2 compensation for air travel and serving on its sustainability advisory group. His academic roles also include leadership in the oLife Fellowship Programme and collaborative projects involving ALMA telescope data analysis.
Key research interests span star formation mechanisms, protoplanetary disk dynamics, and astrochemical processes in space. His work bridges observational astronomy with theoretical modeling, leveraging advanced instrumentation such as hot electron bolometer arrays and radio interferometry.
