Florin Ian is a Lecturer at the University of Geneva, affiliated with the Institute of Environmental Sciences (ISE). He holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Geneva, where he conducted research on transboundary ecological networks, focusing on the 'Greenbelt of Fennoscandia' initiative. His work explores the interplay between environmental conservation, geopolitics, and local community integration since the post-Cold War era. He has taught courses on sustainable development, interdisciplinary methods, and qualitative social sciences in the Master in Environmental Sciences program and coordinated the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Sustainable Development (2020–2022).
During his PhD, he was a visiting researcher at the University of Eastern Finland and Arctic University of Norway (2017), and affiliated with Lund University’s Sustainability Studies Center (2020–2021) under a Swiss National Science Foundation grant. His research emphasizes the political dimensions of large-scale conservation projects and the neoliberalization of environmental governance, particularly in Northern Europe.
Key research interests include transboundary ecological networks, geopolitics of conservation, climate change cartographies, and the role of local actors in sustainability initiatives. His articles and presentations address themes such as the Greenbelt of Fennoscandia, post-capitalist environmental imaginaries, and interdisciplinary climate education.
He has contributed to conferences globally (e.g., European Society for Rural Sociology, Swiss Geoscience Meetings) and co-directed a documentary film exploring the invisibility of urban sanitation workers, highlighting vertical urban marginalization.
