Professor Coulmas has led significant research projects, most notably the DFG-funded project 'Language, Migration and Happiness of Chinese, Japanese, and Turkish communities in Germany' (2018-2021), which investigated the relationship between native language maintenance and happiness among migrant communities in Germany. He has also served as guest editor for special issues examining language and communication practices of East Asian diaspora communities in Western societies.
His work connects sociolinguistic theory with practical applications in language policy and migration studies, contributing to our understanding of how language functions as both a social marker and individual resource in diverse cultural contexts.
