Florian Altermatt is a Full Professor of Aquatic Ecology at the University of Zurich's Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies, and a Directorate Member at Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology). He also serves as President of the Forum Biodiversity at the Swiss Academy of Sciences. His academic journey includes roles as SNSF Professor (2014–2018) and Associate Professor (2018–2023) at the University of Zurich, and Research Group Leader at Eawag since 2011. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Basel (2007) and a Diploma in Biology from the same institution (2004).
His research focuses on spatial ecology, biodiversity-ecosystem functioning, and species interactions, utilizing protist microcosms and Lepidoptera as model systems. He pioneers the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) as a monitoring tool and integrates theoretical models with experimental approaches. His work explores how dispersal, invasions, and global change impact ecological communities and ecosystems.
Key research themes include meta-ecosystems, partial migration effects on food webs, and biodiversity upscaling in freshwater systems. His studies often bridge theoretical insights with applied conservation challenges. Altermatt’s interdisciplinary approach combines experimental microcosms, field observations, and computational modeling to address fundamental ecological questions.
He is affiliated with the University of Zurich’s Global Change and Biodiversity research program and leads a vibrant research group at both UZH and Eawag. His lab actively engages in applied projects, such as developing eDNA-based biodiversity assessment methods for aquatic environments.
