Florence GHERCHANOC is a Professor of Greek History at the Université de Paris, affiliated with the Faculty of Societies and Humanities and the ANHIMA Laboratory (UMR 8210). Her research explores the social, political, and religious dimensions of ancient Greek society, with emphases on gender, family structures, body culture, rituals, and material practices. She has published extensively on topics ranging from nuptial adornments to athletic nudity, maternal roles, and legal treatments of marginalized groups.
Her work intersects historical anthropology, gender studies, and classical archaeology, employing interdisciplinary approaches to reconstruct ancient sociocultural systems. Key themes include the construction of identity through bodily practices, the politics of beauty, and the ritual performance of social bonds.
GHERCHANOC's articles reveal consistent engagement with the representation of gender and power in ancient visual and textual sources. Recent publications analyze bodily aesthetics in Athenian art, jewelry as social signifiers, and maternal symbolism in myth, reflecting her focus on how ancient societies negotiated norms through material and ritual practices.
