Fiona Watt is Director of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and holds a position at King’s College London. Previously, she served as Director of the Centre for Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine at King’s College (2012–2018) and Executive Chair of the UK Medical Research Council (2018–present). She obtained her DPhil from the University of Oxford, followed by postdoctoral research at MIT. Her research focuses on stem cell fate regulation, particularly the interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, with a focus on skin cells and their heterogeneity. She leads the wattlab, collaborating globally on the Human Cell Atlas initiative to map human cellular diversity. Key contributions include insights into epidermal stem cells and dermal fibroblast functionality.
Education: DPhil (Oxford), postdoctoral training at MIT. Professional roles include Deputy Director at Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute and Wellcome Trust Centre for Stem Cell Research. Current affiliations combine EMBL leadership with academic research at King’s College.
Research emphasizes mechanistic studies of cellular state transitions in tissues, advancing regenerative medicine through understanding cellular heterogeneity. Her work bridges basic science and translational research, with implications for health and disease modeling.
