Fiona McEwan-Thompson is a Lecturer at the University of Sunderland, affiliated with the School of Education. She serves as the Integrated Foundation Year (IFY) deputy coordinator and pathway lead for the Society and Education IFY, supporting students transitioning to higher education. Prior to this role, she worked in further education, developing the enhanced mentoring model at Durham Sixth Form Centre. She is an active member of the Foundation Year Network and founded the Foundation Year North East (FYNE) network to foster collaboration among regional universities.
Her teaching focuses on modules for Childhood Studies, Education Studies, and Health and Social Care integrated foundation programs. Research interests include student autonomy, reflective learning through ePortfolios, and promoting inclusivity through gender and diversity training. She is also a poetry therapy practitioner in training through the International Academy for Poetry Therapy.
Key professional contributions include presenting on student engagement at RAISE 2022 and the Foundation Year Network Conference 2023. She advocates for holistic education, emphasizing inclusive practices in childcare, education, and health sectors.
