Fiona McAuliffe is a Lecturer at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC), specializing in Rural Economy, Environment, and Society. Her roles include teaching on Environmental Management and Wildlife and Conservation Management programs. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh’s Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (completed November 2024), focusing on lamb loss in Highland farms and crofts, as well as a Master’s from Queen’s University Belfast and a Bachelor’s from University College Cork.
Her research interests span agroecology, ornithology, animal welfare, and sustainability. Her doctoral work involved analyzing lamb health, mortality, and socio-ecological factors in Highland farming systems. She has conducted field studies, questionnaire surveys, and data analysis on hill sheep enterprises.
Her sole 2024 publication explores blackloss (unexplained lamb losses) in Scottish Highland flocks, emphasizing farmer and crofter experiences. This aligns with broader themes of livestock management and socio-ecological challenges. She has presented invited talks on lamb loss in 2025 and featured in press coverage discussing sea eagle predation and lamb mortality. She collaborates with SRUC’s Hill & Mountain Research Centre and engages in conservation biology through her academic background.
