Fiona Kun Yao is an Associate Professor of Business Administration at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Gies College of Business. Her research focuses on global strategy, emerging economies, and corporate governance, with a particular emphasis on multinational firms, regulatory dynamics, and organizational decision-making. She holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Business Administration from UC Berkeley, an M.Phil. in Management and Organizations from HKUST, and degrees in Management from Nanjing University.
Her educational background includes a B.A. (1999), M.A. (2002), and M.Phil. (2006) from Nanjing University, followed by advanced studies at HKUST and UC Berkeley. Prior to her current role, she served as Assistant Professor (2014–2024) and Lecturer (2013) at UIUC.
Research interests span international business strategy, corporate governance in transitional economies, and the diffusion of organizational practices. Key themes include multinational staffing strategies, regulatory capture, and the impact of informal institutions on firm performance. Recent work analyzes cross-country diffusion of corporate scandals (e.g., #MeToo) and subnational government influences on FDI decisions.
Her articles explore topics like symbolic threats in global staffing, political ties in regulatory participation, and historical competitive dynamics. Awards include Best Reviewer (JIBS, 2025), multiple Best Paper recognitions, and teaching excellence awards (2014–2020, 2022–2023).
Yao’s service roles include Editorial Review Board positions for Journal of International Business Studies and Strategic Management Journal, and Associate Editor for Quarterly Journal of Management (2024–present). Courses taught include Multinational Management and International Business Strategy.
