Dr Fiona Eccles is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Health Research, Faculty of Health and Medicine, Lancaster University. Her work focuses on psychological impacts of chronic neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s, Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis, and dystonia, with an emphasis on developing interventions to support patients and their families. She employs both quantitative and qualitative methodologies in her research.
Current projects include a guided self-help intervention to reduce anxiety among Huntington's disease gene carriers (collaborating with Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust) and investigating psychological wellbeing among Parkinson’s patients during the pandemic. She also explores family member wellbeing in neurological conditions.
Her research outputs span systematic reviews, meta-ethnographies, and feasibility trials, addressing caregiver burden, stigma, and mental health interventions. She advises PhD student Jenny Allen and has contributed to interdisciplinary projects such as the Minds & Movement initiative.
Dr Eccles collaborates with NHS trusts, academic institutions, and international teams to advance psychological care for neurodegenerative disorders. Her work bridges clinical practice and research, aiming to improve quality of life for affected individuals and their families.
