Dr. Fiona Dobbie serves as a Senior Lecturer in Public Health and Director of Research at the Usher Institute, University of Edinburgh, within the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Her research centers on designing and evaluating complex health behaviour change interventions, with specialized focus on addictions including gambling and nicotine, and harm prevention for vulnerable populations like children and young people.
Her academic credentials include a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (2023-2025) from the University of Edinburgh, a PhD on smoking prevention and social networks from the University of Stirling (2014-2021), an MPhil in History of Medicine from the University of Glasgow (1998-1999), and an MA (Hons) in Social Policy/Social History (1994-1998). Prior to academia, she held diverse public health roles across public, private, and voluntary sectors.
Dr. Dobbie's expertise spans three core areas: specialized knowledge in gambling/nicotine harm prevention for vulnerable groups; methodological proficiency in qualitative social network analysis; and applied experience in intervention design/evaluation with emphasis on process evaluation. Her mixed-methods research integrates public health practice with policy development.
Current projects include the NIHR-funded PRoGRAM-A trial preventing adolescent gambling harm through social networks (2023-2026), MRC-funded e-cigarette prevention for secondary pupils (2024-2025), and a Dundee University project on intersectional inclusion for marginalized older groups (2022-2026).
As an educator, she leads two Master of Public Health courses: Introduction to Health Promotion and Developing and Evaluating Complex Interventions. She supervises Masters students and has PhD supervision experience. Her work is conducted through the Centre for Population Health Sciences, where she directs research strategy and collaborates with multidisciplinary public health, social science, and clinical teams.
