Fiona Coward is an Associate Professor in Archaeological Sciences at Bournemouth University, affiliated with the Institute for Modelling Socio-Ecological Transitions (IMSET) as co-Deputy Director and Director of Research. She holds a BA (Hons) in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Cambridge, an MA in Osteoarchaeology, and a PhD in Palaeolithic Archaeology from the University of Southampton.
Her research focuses on human social and cognitive evolution, particularly how social systems scaled from small prehistoric groups to modern networks. Key areas include human adaptation to environmental changes, material culture’s role in social development, and transitions from hunter-gatherer to agricultural societies. She employs network analysis, GIS, and agent-based modeling to explore the interplay between physical and social environments in human evolution.
Dr. Coward leads courses on archaeology, anthropology, and cognitive evolution while contributing to projects like the SUNDASIA initiative in Vietnam and The Connected Past network. Her work aligns with UN SDGs related to sustainable cities, economic growth, land conservation, and global partnerships.
Notable publications include studies on ecosystem collapse, prehistoric social networks in Vietnam, and transdisciplinary sustainability approaches. She advises PhD students and collaborates internationally, emphasizing interdisciplinary methods to address long-term socio-environmental challenges.
