Fiona Collins is a Lecturer in Mathematics Education at Charles Sturt University's School of Education, based at the Wagga Wagga campus. With extensive experience in both primary and secondary school contexts, she brings practical teaching knowledge to her academic role. Dr. Collins holds a BSc/BTeach from Western Sydney University, an MEd in Educational Research, and a PhD from Charles Sturt University.
Dr. Collins' research focuses on strengths approaches in mathematics education, particularly in early childhood settings. Her doctoral work examined strengths in kindergarten mathematics, and she has expanded this research to include the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mathematics teaching and learning. Her work consistently emphasizes positive educational frameworks that build on student capabilities rather than deficits.
Her publication record shows a clear evolution from traditional classroom technology research (2019) to pandemic-related educational challenges (2021-2023) and most recently to strengths-based approaches in early childhood education (2024). This trajectory demonstrates her responsiveness to contemporary educational challenges while maintaining her core focus on positive mathematics learning experiences.
Dr. Collins is an active member of professional organizations including the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers and the Mathematics Association of NSW, and maintains Proficient Teacher Accreditation with the NSW Education Standards Authority. Her collaborative research approach is evident in her numerous co-authored publications with colleagues across multiple institutions.
