Fiona Carroll serves as Reader of Human-Computer Interaction at Cardiff School of Technologies, Cardiff Metropolitan University, and is an active member of the Creative Computing Research Centre (CCRC). With over twenty years of academic experience, she holds a senior research leadership position driving interdisciplinary collaboration.
Her research centers on human wellbeing in technology design, specifically advancing sustainable IoT applications for resource management, gender-inclusive computing education, and privacy frameworks for generative AI systems. This work directly supports UN Sustainable Development Goals for gender equality (SDG 5) and sustainable cities (SDG 11), emphasizing ethical technology deployment in real-world contexts.
Recent publications reveal a strategic focus on practical HCI solutions: integrating sensor networks for water conservation in hospitality, developing physical computing tools to engage girls in STEM, and establishing cybersecurity protocols for small enterprises using machine learning. Her scholarship bridges theoretical innovation with societal impact through user-centered design principles.
Awarded for teaching excellence, Carroll actively mentors students and colleagues while leading research capacity-building initiatives. She champions diversity in computing through curriculum development and outreach programs targeting underrepresented groups.
As part of CCRC, she collaborates on cross-institutional projects addressing sustainability challenges through smart technologies, currently directing investigations into AI ethics and resource-optimization systems with industry partners.
