Dr. Fiona Baumer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology, Division of Child Neurology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She practices at Stanford Medicine Children's Health and holds additional affiliations with Bio-X, the Maternal & Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI), and the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. Her clinical work focuses on pediatric epilepsy care and directing the TMS Presurgical Mapping Program.
Dr. Baumer graduated from the Stanford Human Biology program and completed medical training at Harvard Medical School and residency at Boston Children's Hospital. She returned to Stanford for her epilepsy fellowship. Her research interests center on understanding how abnormal brain activity (spike waves) affects brain network connectivity and contributes to cognitive comorbidities in children with epilepsy. She utilizes advanced techniques including high-density EEG and TMS-EEG to study language processing and brain connectivity in pediatric epilepsy patients.
Analysis of Dr. Baumer's recent publications reveals a strong focus on pediatric epilepsy syndromes, particularly Self-limited Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes (SeLECTS). Her work consistently explores brain connectivity patterns, the impact of interictal epileptiform discharges on cognition, and the therapeutic potential of transcranial magnetic stimulation. Her research spans basic neurophysiology, clinical trials, and healthcare disparities in epilepsy treatment.

- Co-PI for a National Consortium of Pediatric TMS Centers funded by the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Foundation
Dr. Baumer serves as a Med Scholar Project Advisor for Cristina Garcia and Marie Vasitas, and as Postdoctoral Faculty Sponsor for Yiming Gan and Xiwei She. She has secured significant grant funding including the NIH K23 award and leads the National Consortium of Pediatric TMS Centers. Her laboratory work focuses on TMS-EEG methodology development and applications for pediatric epilepsy, with particular emphasis on understanding and treating cognitive comorbidities through neuromodulation approaches.
