Fiona Barker is a Senior Research Fellow in the Planetary Health Division within the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University. She serves as Deputy Director of Research for the Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE) project in Makassar, Indonesia, and Suva, Fiji, focusing on sustainable water systems and public health in underserved urban communities.

Her research centers on the intersection of water, sanitation, and human health, with a strong emphasis on quantitative microbial risk assessment, data management, and FAIR data systems. She investigates health risks associated with wastewater reuse, alternative water sources, and environmental contamination in informal settlements, contributing directly to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water, health, and sustainable cities.
Her recent publications in high-impact journals such as Nature Medicine, Science Advances, and Water Research highlight emerging climate-related health risks, antimicrobial resistance, and innovative monitoring approaches in low-resource settings. Her work increasingly integrates transdisciplinary and equitable research frameworks, especially in global north–south collaborations.

Fiona has contributed to major research grants, including NHMRC-funded projects on gastrointestinal infection pathways and environmentally sensitive watercycle management in informal settlements. She has editorial experience, having served on the board of Microbial Risk Analysis (2016), and is actively involved in mentoring and accepting PhD students through Monash University’s SupervisorConnect platform.
