Fiona Allison

Associate Professor Fiona Allison is an academic and researcher at the University of Technology Sydney's Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. She specializes in justice reinvestment, Indigenous access to justice, and race discrimination law. Her work focuses on reducing Indigenous incarceration through community-driven solutions and addressing systemic inequities in legal systems. She co-leads the Call it Out racism reporting initiative and has pioneered research on Indigenous legal needs through ARC-funded projects like the Indigenous Legal Needs Project. Allison holds adjunct roles at James Cook University and Menzies School of Health Research, and she advises organizations such as Just Reinvest NSW. Her research spans criminal justice reform, health justice partnerships, and policy co-design with Aboriginal communities.

Education: PhD (James Cook University), Master of Law (University of Sydney), Bachelor of Arts/Law (University of Sydney). She has taught legal studies at Tranby Aboriginal College and worked as a legal practitioner in remote communities. Her leadership includes founding the Justice Reinvestment Network Australia and serving as Honorary Fellow at Menzies School of Health Research.

Key projects include the Northern Territory and Queensland justice reinvestment pilots, evaluations of legal aid initiatives, and submissions to parliamentary inquiries on Indigenous incarceration. Her funded research includes grants from the Australian Public Policy Institute, ACT Government, and Australian Human Rights Commission.
