Finian McCann is a Senior Lecturer in Structures and Director of Postgraduate Studies, with over 15 years of research experience in structural mechanics, materials, and sustainable construction. His work spans steel structures, 3D-printed polymers, glass-polymer composites, timber, and structural fire safety. He leads the StegoSolar project (Innovate UK-funded) to develop solar PV heat sinks for Nigeria’s energy market, collaborating with UK and Nigerian institutions.
Recent projects include 3D-printed biopolymers for construction (FlexSea Ltd.), re-used steel grading methods (EMR Ltd.), and robotic additive manufacturing (EPSRC). He has secured funding from Innovate UK and EPSRC, focusing on net-zero innovations and industry partnerships. His research emphasizes renewable energy, biopolymers, and sustainable materials.
- Awards: IStructE MSc Research Award (2021–22) for timber fire safety studies.
- Grants & Partnerships: Over £X million in projects with industry leaders like FlexSea, EMR, and Symmetrys Ltd., targeting net-zero solutions.
McCann’s research groups include Structures and Materials, with active collaborations in robotics, biocomposites, and structural reliability analysis. His work bridges academia and industry, driving innovations in sustainable construction technologies.
