Filippo Bontadini is an Associate Fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex Business School. He also holds a Postdoctoral Fellowship at SciencesPo-OFCE. His research focuses on global value chains, structural change, economic development, industrial policies, and export diversification patterns. He completed his PhD in Science and Technology Policy at SPRU in 2019, where he investigated global value chains using input-output analysis and transaction-level data.

Research Focus: Bontadini’s work explores the interplay between technological asymmetries, global value chain participation, and employment outcomes in Europe. He also analyzes micro-level determinants of trade upgrading using Colombian transaction data and contributes to understanding green goods production dynamics in Europe. His methodologies include firm-level dataset analysis across Europe, particularly in high-growth companies.
Teaching & Engagement: During his PhD, he taught courses such as 'Innovation for Economic Development' and 'Economics of Innovation' at SPRU, and 'Economic Perspectives on Development' at the Institute of Development Studies. He has organized academic events, including the 2016 Royal Economic Society Symposium of Junior Researchers.
Projects & Collaborations:
- Contributed to the Horizon 2020 RISIS Project, creating firm-level datasets across Europe.
- Consultant for the SITA project (funded by DFID) at the Institute of Development Studies.
