Filipe Maia is a Professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (Molecular Biophysics) at Uppsala University. He specializes in coherent imaging with X-ray lasers and lensless imaging methods, focusing on structural dynamics at the nanoscale. His work contributes to the Biophysics Network within the university's Faculty of Science.
His research interests revolve around advanced imaging techniques using X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs), including sample delivery optimization, real-time data processing, and structural characterization of biological and nanoscale systems. Key areas of exploration include virus structures, protein dynamics, and nanoparticle morphology under ultrafast conditions.
Recent work highlights include developing methodologies for ultrafast X-ray diffraction of single proteins, enhancing aerosol sample handling, and applying machine learning to analyze heterogeneous samples. Maia has also contributed to open data initiatives and software tools like Cheetah and Nanosurveyor for high-throughput XFEL experiments.
His publications emphasize innovations in imaging hardware, algorithmic improvements for data analysis, and interdisciplinary applications spanning biophysics, materials science, and nanotechnology.
