Filip Balunović is a Scientific Associate at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory, University of Belgrade, and holds the rank of Associate Professor at the Faculty of Media and Communications. He earned his PhD in Sociology of Social Movements from Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence (2020), following two Master's degrees: in Human Rights and Democracy from the University of Sarajevo/University of Bologna (2015), and in European Studies and International Relations from the European Institute in Nice and Bilgi University Istanbul (2013). His Bachelor's in Political Science was completed at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Political Sciences (2011).
Balunović's research focuses on sociology of social movements, critical theory, and political transformations in the Balkans, with emphasis on human rights discourse, left-wing activism, and pandemic-era political struggles. His work critically examines intersections of power, ideology, and collective action in post-socialist contexts.
His publications demonstrate expertise in Balkan political sociology, featuring critical analyses of democratic socialism, opposition movements, and the politicization of science. Recurring themes include counter-hegemony, ideological evolution in post-Yugoslav spaces, and critiques of neoliberal human rights frameworks.
