Associate Professor Fernando Guimaraes leads the Translational Innate Immunotherapy Group at the Frazer Institute, University of Queensland. He is a Principal Research Fellow with expertise in NK cell biology and cancer immunotherapy.
His research develops innovative treatments for metastatic cancers by engineering NK cells and targeting immune checkpoints. Key interests include NK cell modulation, tumor microenvironment interactions, and overcoming therapy resistance. His work has identified novel immune regulators like TNFR1/TNFR2 signaling dichotomies.
Honors include the 2019 Researcher of the Year (CCA) and 2020 QLD Young Tall Poppy Science Award. He leads NHMRC- and MRFF-funded projects and collaborates internationally. His lab employs advanced techniques like CRISPR and single-cell analysis to develop cellular immunotherapies.
He mentors early-career researchers and contributes to global cancer immunotherapy consortia, focusing on translating lab findings to clinical applications.
