Fernando Cervero

Fernando Cervero is a distinguished academic and researcher currently serving as Professor of Anesthesiology and Dentistry, and Adjunct Professor of Physiology and Neurology at McGill University. He holds the directorship of the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain, a prominent research institution in Montreal, Canada. His academic career spans decades across multiple countries, including Spain, the UK, and Canada.

Cervero earned his MD in 1972, PhD in 1975 (Madrid, Spain), and DSc in 1992 (Edinburgh, UK). His research focuses on the neurobiological mechanisms of pain and analgesia, bridging human psychophysics and cellular/molecular analysis in experimental animals. A key emphasis is on visceral pain and its neural underpinnings in organ-related diseases.

His scholarly contributions include a seminal review on visceral pain mechanisms, analyses of AMPA receptor dynamics in spinal pain processing, and foundational work on substance P receptors in nociception. These studies span disciplines like neuroscience, neurophysiology, and pain medicine.
