Ferhat Kaya is a Researcher in the Department of History, Culture and Communication Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Oulu. His work focuses on mammal evolution through field and laboratory studies of paleontology, ecomorphology, and paleoenvironmental contexts for extinct mammals including hominids from the Neogene period of the Old World.
His primary research interests include:
- Mammal Evolution: Investigating evolutionary trajectories of extinct mammals across geologic time
- Paleobiogeography: Mapping distribution patterns of African and Asian mammals
- Paleoecology: Reconstructing ancient ecosystems and community dynamics
- Vertebrate Paleontology: Specializing in fossil identification and analysis
Dr. Kaya conducts fieldwork in East Africa, Turkey, and Western Mongolia—regions offering unique geological settings to study mammalian adaptation, diversification, and biogeography. His methodology integrates fossil discovery with environmental reconstruction to understand evolutionary drivers.
His publication record (2003-2025) reveals strong emphasis on Miocene-Pliocene mammal evolution, particularly hipparionid horses. Key contributions include new species descriptions, biochronology refinements using radioisotopic dating, and tectonic-paleoclimate-mammal evolution interactions in Anatolia. Interdisciplinary approaches combining magnetostratigraphy, taphonomy, and ecometrics characterize his work.
From 2003-2020, Dr. Kaya served as teaching assistant, laboratory assistant, and participating lecturer across Turkey, USA, and Finland. He developed instruction in paleobiology, human evolution, vertebrate paleontology, and Neogene paleoecology, directly connecting field research to educational practice.
