Professor Fergus McGhee is an Associate Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford’s Faculty of English Language & Literature, and a Fellow and Tutor at Corpus Christi College. His research focuses on 19th-century poetry and prose, emphasizing close reading’s creative potential and their intersections with visual culture, moral philosophy, and intellectual history. He is particularly known for exploring how Victorian literature engages with questions of knowing oneself and others, ethical reflection, and the role of indistinctness in art.
His first book project, Darklier Understood, examines Victorian poetry’s moral psychology through the lens of textual analysis. His second project, The Art of Indistinctness, investigates the cultural value of vagueness in Victorian art and literature. He has published widely, including award-winning articles on Clough, Rossetti, and Pater, and edited a special issue of Victorian Poetry on 're-encounter.'
McGhee’s recent conference presentations span topics like Rossetti’s poetry, Whistler’s art, and Victorian psychology. His work bridges literary analysis with aesthetics and psychology, reflecting his commitment to interdisciplinary research.
Awards include the 2020 Review of English Studies Prize and the 2021 Richard D. Gooder Prize. He supervises graduate students in Victorian literature and teaches courses on moral philosophy and literary form.
