Fergus Guppy

Fergus Guppy is an Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University's School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society. He is a founding member of Sport Rχiv, the first dedicated pre-print server in Sport and Exercise Science, and co-founded STORK (Society for Transparency, Openness, and Replication in Kinesiology), promoting methodological rigor in movement science. His research focuses on interventions to improve public health and elite athlete performance, with particular emphasis on musculoskeletal physiology, wearable technology, and inclusion in sports.

Key areas of research include core body temperature monitoring in endurance athletes, transgender athlete eligibility criteria, and the integration of wearable sensors in elite sport. He has contributed to UN Sustainable Development Goals through work on health and sustainable communities. Fergus is actively involved in anti-doping research and policy, including studies on anabolic steroids and gene expression in athletes.

His publications span 2009–2025, with recent work addressing ethical dilemmas in cooling technologies, transgender athlete performance analysis, and the implications of gender-affirming treatment on sports eligibility. He collaborates globally on projects ranging from marathon performance modeling to the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on skeletal development.
